Available: Early-mid October Taste: Sweet Use: Eating History: As the second most popular variety in the world and in the United States, and it's not surprising that the Golden Delicious is Michigan's second most widely grown variety. Golden Delicious was discovered as a chance seedling in Clay County, West Virginia., in 1914 and was named Mullin's Yellow Seedling. Its name is a result of a branding design and the apple is not genetically related to the Red Delicious. Instead, the Golden Delicious' parentage is thought to be Golden Reinette and Grimes Golden. Due to its sweetness, it requires little added sugar in cooking uses, such as sauce, pie and baking. |
