Granny Smith

Available: Late October

Taste: Tart

Use: Eating

History:

Granny Smith apples were raised from a chance seed thrown out by Mrs. Thomas Smith in New South Wales, Australia in the mid-1860s. The seeds were thought to be from a French Crab Apple that had been open pollinated.  Today, most people know a Granny Smith from a distance by their easily recognized signature green color.  These apples also keep well.
