Winesap

Available: Mid October

Taste: Mildly spicy and sweet

Use: All Purpose

History:

Winesap is one of the oldest and at one time one of the most popular apples grown in North America. It dates back to the colonial era. Winesap is another eastern apple well adapted to Michigan. It is believed to be a native of New Jersey, where it was described as "the favorite cider fruit" in the region. Winesap is good for eating fresh and for cooking since it has firm and crisp flesh and a sweet aromatic flavor. However, its most famous use is in cider, where it has been a favorite for over 200 years.
